"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”" Isaiah 6:8 (NIV)
First Congregational is a missional church. Service is in our very DNA. If you have a heart for the poor and marginalized of our city, there are ways you can get involved in outreach.
As we outline on our How We Give page, we have organizations that we support. There are opportunities to volunteer directly with them. If you are interested, please email the church office and we can connect you. If you would like to learn more about any of these outreach opportunities or have some ideas of your own, please speak to our Council Outreach Rep, Dainis.
Sunday Supper The Sunday Suppers are held every Sunday late afternoon at St. Andrew's United Church on the corner of Robie and Coburg. Volunteers are always welcome. First Congregational is on a rotating list of churches that provide the main meal to the suppers. To help with this, just raise your hand in church when we make the announcement and we will give you a pan and a recipe. An even better idea is to gather with some friends and do this together. We encourage people to stay and serve on the Sunday that we provide the meal.
Souls Harbour Rescue Mission Souls Harbour has regular special holiday meals and events such as winter clothing giveaways that require large numbers of volunteers. There are also opportunities to serve at their drop-in during the week. First Congregational has organized a drive for winter hats, mittens/gloves and socks for the Mission in the past, and has sent a number of volunteers to their meals. Watch for announcements in church and on the website if you would like to help out.
Brunswick Street Mission Breakfasts If you're an early riser, this might be a good outreach for you! At least a few times a year we gather a team of volunteers to prepare and serve the breakfast at the Brunswick Street Mission. The group typically meets between 5:30-6am on Saturdays, but is finished for the day by 9am. Our next Saturday breakfast will be announced in church and on the website.
